Students will explore the elements of melody, rhythm, harmony, and form through the lens of popular music. Students will use critical thinking skills to develop original material through the use of the concepts covered in the course. The final product of this class will be a website designed as a digital portfolio of the work created in class and the process in which that occurred.
Materials:
Evaluation:
Projects 40% will be assigned throughout the semester. These projects will involve some elements of editing techniques, sound design, recording, and other skills that the students will be asked to complete. Projects will always be assigned well in advance of their due date. While the teacher will work with each student, Late Work is highly discouraged and will result in a reduced grade.
Class Participation 30% will be based on student's active participation in class. This includes coming to every class with the necessary materials, a positive attitude, and a collaborative spirit. There also may be activities that students are asked to complete on a day-to-day basis including presenting projects for the class.
Presentation 20% You will present completed projects in class to your peers by sharing your process, playing your piece, and then receiving feedback from the class and teacher. As a peer listener, you are expected to actively listen, show attention and respect to the presenter, and provide constructive commentary to the presenter.
Website 10% Students will be building an online portfolio of their work using Weebly. Students will update their websites with new project posts, artist statements, embedded sound files, and other influential material.

Materials:
- Storage and Accounts: Students will need to have a SoundCloud account to share their music and create a website at Weebly. We will also be using OneDrive to submit projects to the teacher. The link to our class is on the bulletin board.
- Headphones: students must have their own headphones to work with at their stations. Over the ear, wired headphones are the best option, but some in-ear options may work too. Bluetooth earphones will cause issues when we are using keyboards with latency- they can be used in a pinch, but are not recommended.
